Into the Wild In Bangladesh : Discovering the Largest Safari Park in Asia

Located in the natural forest of Bhawal Garh in Gazipur, Bangladesh’s second safari park,  Gazipur Safari Park,  spans 556 acres as a natural habitat for wild animals.

Just 43 kilometers from Dhaka, this pride of Bangladesh is Asia’s largest safari park. Nestled in a picturesque natural environment, the park is a beloved destination for thousands of nature lovers.

Why it’s Considered the Largest Safari Park in Asia ?

The entire landscape is adorned with fountains, aquariums, and visually stunning structures. Built on the modern concept of nurturing wild animals in a forest-like environment, the park covers 3,690 acres.

It’s smaller than a rainforest reserve but larger than a zoo. In this wildlife park, animals roam freely instead of being confined in cages, while visitors observe them safely from protected vehicles.

The main objectives behind establishing this unique safari park are to conserve biodiversity, promote eco-tourism, and provide opportunities for education, research, and recreation.

The Safari Coach

The most attractive event here is the Safari Coach. Protected buses and jeeps are available for visitors, who board these safe vehicles by paying a fee per trip.

They roam around and enjoy watching the wild animals in a natural environment.

The giraffe, the tallest mammal in the world, is a major attraction. Even a 6-foot-tall newborn giraffe is taller than most humans.

No two giraffes have the same patch pattern on their bodies—just like human fingerprints. These long-necked creatures spend most of their lives standing.

Giraffe’s Gentle Lifestyle & Deer Diversity

Daily eating, a couple of hours of dozing, and even 10-minute naps—all happen while standing. A giraffe’s tongue is nearly 20 inches long.

This peaceful, social animal rarely gets into fights. Among land mammals, the giraffe has the longest tail. For self-defense, it uses its strong legs.

Another attraction is the Thomson’s gazelle, known for its elegant horns. This herbivore, living on grass, leaves, and vines, has extremely sharp vision, smell, and hearing.

In addition to the gazelle, the park features chital deer over 81 acres, barking deer over 22 acres, and Goyal and sambar deer across 80 acres.

Among all deer species, the sambar is the largest in size and weight.

The front part resembles a bull, the back part a deer, with a neck and tail like a horse—this fascinating creature is called the Wildebeest.

These horned animals roam across Africa in the millions. The black and white stripe patterns on a zebra’s body inspired the design of the zebra crossing used on roads.

The tiger is the largest member of the cat family. This is the thrill of the safari park—you get to see ferocious animals up close.

The majestic tiger, our national animal, roams with royal grace. Lions inhabit a dedicated 21-acre area within the park.

Safari Kingdom

The lion, king of the animal kingdom, symbolizes strength, power, and bravery.

Though often called the king of the jungle, lions actually live in groups on grasslands.

Lions belong to the feline family and are known to be quite lazy—spending more than 20 hours a day sleeping or resting.

The hippopotamus, native to Africa, spends most of its time in water except when feeding. In the Safari Kingdom’s lake, there are boat ride facilities.

The lake is also home to black swans. Among the duck species, black swans have notably long necks.

These aquatic birds look stunning as they glide across the water and can even sleep while floating.

Fancy Carp Garden

A vibrant display of colorful fish awaits at the Fancy Carp Garden in Safari Kingdom. Without a stomach, these ornamental Japanese Carp are always nibbling on something.

The Japanese consider fancy Carp a symbol of love and harmony—something you’ll feel when you visit this place.

You’ll also find a variety of other fish species in the Marine Aquarium. From angel fish, Oscars, goldfish to tiger koi—each fish is unique in size, shape, and appearance.

Safari Kingdom’s Marine Aquarium offers a glimpse into the mesmerizing world of the deep sea.

Nature Observation Center at Gazipur Safari park

The Nature Observation Center features numerous species of trees and model murals of wild animals, brought to life for visitors through engaging audio-visual presentations.

Crocodiles are cold-blooded creatures. Just as the tiger or lion rules the land, the crocodile reigns in water.

When on land, they keep their mouths open to cool down their body temperature.

Crocodiles can swim at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour.

They can stay underwater continuously for two to three hours. The park also has gharials—an almost extinct member of the crocodile family.

Additionally, there are massive monitor lizards that are constantly searching for food.

Hence, they are called “monitor lizards.” With their sharp eyesight and long tongues, they can detect the scent of food easily.

Vulture Rehabilitation Center

Though they may look frightening, pythons are among the most beautiful creatures. The Heliaster Indus, also known as the Brahminy Kite, along with the Black Kite, are two types of eagles found here.

The Brahminy Kite is well known as a scavenger bird. There’s also the Madantak, regarded as the king of herons. Interestingly, this bird truly has no feathers on its head.

The Vulture Rehabilitation Center here provides shelter to vultures that are nearly extinct.

Vultures are known as friends of the environment—they search for waste from great heights and help purify the surroundings by consuming it.

A fascinating collection of hornbills is also found here, characterized by their large bodies and king-sized yellow beaks.

Among flying birds, the pelican is the second heaviest.

They have huge pouches attached to their beaks, which allow them to swallow large fish easily.

Interestingly, they have no nostrils and breathe through their beaks.

Fancy Duck Garden

In the Fancy Duck Garden, you’ll find the ever-busy Mandarin Ducks and Carolina Ducks. Gazipur Safari Park also features the Crowned Pheasant.

This area is fully enclosed with mesh fencing and circular wooden frames. On the ground, crested pheasants and peacocks roam freely.

An interesting fact: peahens don’t have extravagant feathers—only peacocks do. They spread their colorful feathers either to attract the attention of peahens or to intimidate enemies.

You’ll also see the ostrich, with powerful legs, capable of running at speeds up to 70 km/h.

There are also sturdy mini horses standing about 34 inches tall, which actually live longer than regular horses.

Visitors are welcomed with a salute by the majestic elephant. For a small fee, anyone can enjoy a ride on its back.

Among all animals, elephants have the largest brain, although their eyes are quite small.

However, their sense of smell is incredibly strong. The scientific name of the Asian elephant is Elephas maximus.

kangaroo

Though the primary habitat of the kangaroo is Australia and New Guinea, you can also find them roaming around Gazipur Safari Park.

Most of them are herbivores and belong to the Macropus family—Macropus meaning “large foot”. When walking slowly, kangaroos use all four limbs.

But when they run, they leap powerfully using their strong hind legs. Kangaroos are the only animals that move by hopping.

They can jump a distance three times their own height in one leap.

Kangaroos can grow up to six feet tall and have a keen sense of hearing. Their average lifespan is up to six years.

They also have strong tails, which they use for balance while running.

Gazipur Safari Park is divided into several sections:

  1. Extensive Safari

  2. Biodiversity Park

  3. Core Safari

  4. Safari Kingdom

Each offering a unique wildlife experience within the Largest Safari Park in Asia. In Safari Kingdom, visitors can walk around on foot to see small wild animals. The entire Macaw Land and Parrot Aviary are filled with colorful, exotic birds.

Among the parrot family, the macaw with the long beak is the largest. The red macaw, known for its long tail, has a spectacular feather pattern.

Some of these intelligent parrots can mimic human speech or any sound exactly.

In the Butterfly Corner, you can observe the entire life cycle of a butterfly and how it grows and transforms.

Natural History Museum

One of the main attractions of Gazipur Safari Park is the Natural History Museum. It houses around two thousand preserved specimens and remains of vertebrate and invertebrate animals.

Researchers, tourists, and students visit this place to gain real-life insights into endangered and extinct species.

In the aquarium, you’ll find various animal remains preserved in chemical solutions, beautifully displayed for educational purposes.

A Park Within the Park!

Inside Gazipur Safari Park, there’s a unique attraction — a giant crocodile sculpture with its mouth wide open.

Visitors walk through its open jaws and pass through the “stomach” to reach a children’s park on the other side. This area is filled with various rides designed to bring joy to young visitors.

One of the most popular and unique experiences of Gazipur Safari Park is the 9D Movie Theater.

It offers age-appropriate films for children and teens that feel incredibly lifelike.

For dining, there are the Tiger and Lion Restaurants, where guests can enjoy meals while watching wild animals roam freely nearby.

Conclusions

To view the entire Safari Park from a bird’s-eye perspective, there is a watchtower.

From the top of the tower, one can see the winding lake, the elevated forested land called Chala, and the lower plains known as Baida, forming a beautiful natural harmony.

For those coming from afar, there are multiple rest houses available. Nestled in the lap of nature, these accommodations are well-equipped with essential facilities.

With its diverse attractions and extraordinary biodiversity, Gazipur Safari Park has become a perfect destination for recreation, especially for those seeking a break from the hustle of urban life.
