How Hidden Villages in Bangladesh Are Gaining Fame For Handmade Swings

Bathed in the warm red glow of the eastern sky, the newborn sun rises in all its splendor, as if cleansing itself for a new day. Like a strand of pearls, the mist-covered rice fields adorn the earth with breathtaking beauty.

The sweet cooing of the cuckoo announces the arrival of spring, filling the air with the promise of renewal.

Through the vast, green stretches, serpentine water bodies glide gracefully across the scenic land of Nagori Union in Kaliganj, Gazipur.

Wrapped in layers of lush greenery, nature’s masterpiece breathes life into every fold of this peaceful plain.

Along the roads and open fields, the carefree joys of childhood come alive. As mealtime nears, every household hums with the cheerful bustle of cooking, each preparing their own special dishes with love and care.

There’s nothing extravagant—just simple, everyday meals. Yet, when cooked with heartfelt emotion over a clay stove, this scene becomes a timeless snapshot of village life in Bangladesh.

In some houses, strong iron rods are being shaped into circular forms, likely for a purpose that will add to the charm of this beautiful community.

And in these moments, Handmade Swings often hang from trees, offering a quiet spot to enjoy the serenity of nature.

Handmade Swings : The Art of Weaving

A group of craftsmen works with intense focus, shaping iron discs that will become the foundation for beautiful Handmade Swings. These discs, in various shapes, serve as raw materials, ready to be transformed.

The weaving process is done with thread—braided carefully to form the base. In this village, nearly every home is involved in making swings. Each house feels like a small factory dedicated to the craft.

Women, in particular, excel in this art. With skilled hands, the threads seem to come alive, and through careful, precise weaving, the swing gradually takes shape into a stunning piece of craftsmanship.

Different colored threads are chosen to create swings in a variety of styles. Each thread is knotted and twisted meticulously, creating the four hanging corners that hold the swing in place.

The raw threads come from Narayanganj, some already dyed and others dyed locally by the artisans themselves.

Once the seat is complete, it’s carefully attached to the four intricately woven corners, ready to be enjoyed as a Handmade Swing.

Women Empowerment

In the villages of Biratul Dhanun, Bagdi, Gararia, and Bindan in Nagarpur Union of Kaliganj, swing-making has become a popular craft, earning these villages the nickname _ “Swing Villages.”

The next step in creating these Handmade Swings involves adding the bottom portion of the swing. Depending on its size and design, crafting a single swing can take anywhere from a few hours to several days.

In these peaceful rural areas, a quiet revolution is taking place. Alongside their everyday household tasks, the women here are generating extra income by making swings.

Approximately three hundred men and women from this region are now part of this thriving cottage industry, helping to shape the future of Handmade Swings.

Types Of Handmade Swings

Sometimes, swings are crafted while hanging from the veranda; other times, they’re tied to the sturdy branches of nearby trees where they quietly come to life.

In some places, artisans even build high bamboo scaffolds to sit atop and continue working on the swings from above — a beautiful blend of balance and creativity.

While bamboo and cane swings were once common in this region, today’s demand is for thread-made swings. With artistic imagination and intricate weaving, artisans shape various styles such as bride swings, chair swings, and round disk swings.

These handcrafted swings are not only popular among urban elites but also gaining recognition overseas. The craft is growing steadily, and even school and college students are joining in.

Entrepreneurship

A small swing requires up to one kilogram of yarn, while larger swings need even more. Artistic designs are crafted on the surface of the swings, much like the traditional patterns found in Shitol Pati (cool mats).

Recently, factories have been established in this area to meet the growing demand.

Thanks to nationwide success and potential, new entrepreneurs are emerging in the industry.

Each factory employs an average of 120 to 130 artisans, offering decent wages. This has helped many women in the villages become self-reliant. Women from nearby districts also come here to work.

Artisans are paid per swing, with wages varying based on the design and size of the Handmade Swings.

Swings are regularly supplied from here to the capital Dhaka, as well as to Khulna, Jessore, and Chittagong. A skilled artisan can make three to four children’s swings per day, depending on their experience.

Cushions for Swings

Cushions are essential for comfort when sitting on Handmade Swings. The process of making cushions starts with garment scraps, which are repurposed to create the soft seating.

Around the swing-making industry, a separate small-scale cottage industry for cushion production has quietly flourished in the region.

Cushion factories are busy day and night, providing employment to thousands of young people. The cushions are made to match the type of swing, with designs varying based on customer demand.

Some swings require two cushions, while others may need several, adding a personal touch to each swing.

Swings Have Several Benefits

  1. Handmade Swings are a popular form of play for children.

  2. Not only that, swinging helps with both the physical and mental development of children.

  3. For adults, a swing provides a sense of peace in the midst of a busy life.

  4. Reading books or listening to music on a swing in the yard or garden is a great way to reduce stress.

  5. Swinging also helps improve children’s ability to maintain balance.

Conclusions

Swings are collected from house to house in the village and then gathered at the factory. From there, they are distributed throughout the country. Alongside yarn swings, stand swings are also made here.

Since they don’t need to be hung, these are perfect for gardens, balconies, or courtyards.

Before being sold, each swing undergoes a quality check at the factory. The cushions are then attached, completing the swing’s full beauty. In addition to wholesale sales, swings are also available online through their self-made websites.
